Notley promising some spending in Alberta budget despite revenue squeeze

Premier Rachel Notley says the Alberta government will maintain public-sector services and not lay off workers despite a drop in revenue.

CALGARY — Premier Rachel Notley says the Alberta government will maintain public-sector services and not lay off workers despite a drop in revenue.

Notley gave some hints about the NDP's first provincial budget next month in a speech to the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association in Calgary.

She warned there will be some program cuts, since the government wants to return to a balanced budget as soon as possible.

Notley also suggested there will be some cash allocated for what she called "shovel-ready" projects at the municipal level.

The premier declined to say when asked by reporters if Albertans could face tax increases when the budget is released in late October.

She did indicate she believes Albertans are willing to pay for their health and education.
