RCMP Cst. T.W. Heystek with the Red Deer rural detachment talks with the crew tasked with removing the body of a 35-year-old male killed in a single-vehicle collision on Wednesday morning. The fatal collision occurred just east of the Joffre Bridge off Hwy. 11.

A 35-year-old Red Deer-area man was killed Wednesday morning when his pickup veered off Hwy 11 into a farmer’s field.

Red Deer Rural RCMP said the man was driving westbound just east of the Joffre Bridge about 7:20 a.m. when the truck left the road and went through the south ditch and over a gravel road before coming to a stop.

The only occupant of the vehicle, a man from the rural Red Deer area, was dead at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

“It appears that a single truck went off the road into a farmer’s field. As it travelled through the field it struck an approach, and it appears that a fence post or another large object came through the windshield, striking the driver,” said RCMP Const. Troy Heystek at the scene.

“Just looking over the scene here, he did drive through a barbed wire fence, so we’re suspecting it is a fence post that struck the driver.”

The accident was reported by nearby residents.” The owners of the land, they heard a bang and called police.”

Police are continuing to investigate and have not determined why the pickup left the road.

The man’s name is not being released until family are notified.
