Alberta Occupation Health and Safety is investigating a fatal workplace accident that occurred this week near Rimbey.

A man was killed Tuesday while doing some mechanical work on a piece of heavy equipment, said Trent Bancarz, a spokesperson for Alberta Jobs, Economy and Northern Development, which houses Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.

OHS is not authorized to identify the company involved, or name the deceased, Bancarz added. Rimbey RCMP previously reported it was a 38-year-old man from Bentley who was killed while servicing an excavator.

Paramedics and firefighters arrived at 11 a.m. on Tuesday to Range Road 11 in Lacombe Country to assist the worker, who was not conscious or breathing at the time. He could not be revived.

RCMP contacted Occupational Health and Safety investigators. Bancarz said the situation was assessed and no orders were issued.

It could take up to two years to conclude the investigation, which is done to see if any laws were broken, said Bancarz.

These kinds of investigations can lead to compliance orders, penalties or charges being issued, but each case is different and “we need to do data gathering to see what comes next,” he added.
