Olds College of Agriculture and Technology has bestowed an honorary degree on Jay Cross in recognition of his contributions to veterinary medicine and education.
“Dr. Cross is an extraordinary individual who has devoted his career to making a positive impact in veterinary medicine,” says Olds College vice-president academic Debbie Thompson in a statement announcing the honour. “His commitment to fostering innovative thinking among students and addressing the challenges of the 21st century perfectly aligns with our values at Olds College.”
“We are thrilled to honour Dr. Cross with the 2023 Olds College Honorary Degree,” said Olds College president Ben Cecil. “His expertise in reproductive biology and genetics, coupled with his dedication to empowering students to tackle future problems, makes him a truly deserving recipient of this prestigious award.”
With over 20 years of experience as a professor of reproductive biology and genetics at the University of Calgary, Dr. Cross has made significant advancements in understanding animal reproduction and development, His research on embryo implantation, fetal growth, and maternal adaptations to pregnancy has greatly improved veterinary care practices.
Cross was presented with his honorary degree during Olds College’s Convocation ceremony last Saturday.
Cross is a professor of molecular genetics in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Cumming School of Medicine. He is recognized internationally in the areas of animal reproductive and developmental genetics and is the founding director of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and current president of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
Beyond his academic achievements, Cross founded The 2050 Project, an educational program that encourages high school students to tackle global challenges and develop innovative solutions. As the Chief Instigation Officer at the McEachran Institute, he leads efforts to protect the health of animals, people, and ecosystems by promoting skills and capacity in veterinary medicine and related professions.
The Olds College Honorary Degree recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their fields and demonstrated a commitment to excellence and innovation.
