One person is dead after a fiery crash involving a large semi unit and a car in icy conditions on Hwy 2 south of Olds on Monday.

The collision occurred just after noon in the southbound lanes, about seven km south of the Olds overpass.

Innisfail RCMP report the collision happened when a semi-truck hauling two flat deck trailers left the northbound lanes, crossed the median and then entered the southbound lanes.

The truck collided with the car, which burst into flames.

A Mountie and a bystander arrived shortly after, but were unable to put out the flames.

The car was removed from the scene so the body could be removed. It appears one person was inside.

Police say no information on the vehicle’s description or the identity of the vehicle will be released at this time.

RCMP anticipate it will be tough to positively identify the victim.

The driver of the semi was checked out at hospital but wasn’t seriously hurt.

Police believe that winter weather and icy road conditions were a significant cause of the crash.

The highway was re-opened at 4:15 p.m.
