A 20-year-old Sylvan Lake man is dead and his passenger remains in hospital following a rollover west of Red Deer on Friday morning.

Sylvan Lake RCMP said the driver of an SUV heading east on Hwy 11 lost control east of the Hwy 20 intersection and hit a guardrail before rolling. The vehicle landed on its roof and was partially submerged in a creek.

Passersby found the driver and his 25-year-old woman passenger trapped inside the vehicle under water and pulled them to safety and started performing first aid. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The woman was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, where she remains in intensive care.

RCMP continues to investigate with the help of a collision analyst.

Alberta Environment was also called to the scene to deal with the vehicle fluids that had leaked into the creek.

The names of those involved have not been released.
