One killed in crash near Olds

One person is dead following a Hwy 2 crash near Olds on Thursday.

At about 3:45 p.m. the Innisfail Integrated Traffic Unit and Olds Fire and Emergency services were called to the crash on the Hwy 2 southbound lanes about five km north of Hwy 27.

At about 3:45 p.m. the Innisfail Integrated Traffic Unit and Olds Fire and Emergency services were called to the crash on the Hwy 2 southbound lanes about five km north of Hwy 27.

Police said a car driven by a 20-year-old male from Calgary was southbound in the right lane when it lost control, and went off the right side of the road into the ditch. The car rolled several times before coming to rest on four wheels.

The vehicle’s three passengers included an 18-year-old male from Vancouver, a 20-year-old male from Victoria and a 19-year-old male from Calgary. It is believed that all four occupants were wearing their seatbelts.

Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to extricate the occupants.

One passenger was taken to hospital via ambulance with serious injuries but was later pronounced dead by medical staff.

Another passenger was transported via ambulance to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The driver and remaining passenger received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The southbound lanes of Hwy 2 were restricted to one lane for about four hours while members of the RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs investigated.

Police are asking that if anyone has information regarding a black or blue Dodge Caravan that may have been involved in the collision to call their local police department or the Innisfail RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This collision is still under investigation. No charges have been laid at this time.
