One new death due to implications of COVID-19 has been reported in Red Deer.

Since the beginning of the pandemic there has now been 97 deaths in the city, according to the Government of Alberta’s Monday update. Provincially, there have been 3,972 deaths, which is an increase of 18 when compared to the government’s Friday update.

Over the weekend, 1,113 new COVID-19 cases were identified in Alberta: 429 on Friday, 402 on Saturday and 282 on Sunday.

But the number of active cases in the province continues to fall. There are now 7,158 active cases, to go along with the 517,587 recovered cases.

There are 1,055 active cases in Alberta Health Services’ central zone, including 291 in Red Deer, according to geospatial mapping on the provincial government’s website.

Elsewhere, the City of Lacombe has 58 active cases, Red Deer County has 50, Clearwater County has 41, Lacombe County has 33, Sylvan Lake has 29, Mountain View County and Olds have 27 each, and Stettler County has 25.

Wetaskiwin County, including Maskwacis, has 107 active cases, while Rimbey, including West Ponoka County and part of Lacombe County, has 11 and Ponoka, including East Ponoka County, has eight.

The City of Camrose has 50, Drumheller has 18, Kneehill County has 17 and Camrose County has 14.

There are currently 1,103 people in Alberta who are in hospital with COVID-19, including 77 currently in intensive care units. There are 126 hospitalizations in the central zone, including seven in the ICU.

Also on Monday, Rachel Notley, leader of Alberta’s NDP, said she tested positive for COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test.

“I have been triple-vaccinated and my symptoms are mild. I plan to continue to work hard on behalf of Alberta families while in isolation at my home,” she said on Twitter.

“I look forward to returning to the Alberta Legislature as soon as I am healthy enough to do so. I am going to take this chance to remind you all to get first, second and booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.”
