One person died Sunday afternoon in northern Alberta in a two vehicle collision.

At about 12:30 p.m., Slave Lake RCMP responded to a fatal collision involving a small sedan and small suv vehicle on Highway 2 near Range Road 73 at 9 Mile bridge.

Preliminary investigation was underway late Sunday as Slave Lake RCMP and the RCMP Collision Analyst were on scene.

Traffic was being re-routed to the secondary roadways through the Hamlets of Wide Water and Wagner. Traffic delays were expected for several hours while police were on scene.

The names of the deceased will not be released, RCMP say.

Road conditions are described as icy and motorists are asked to avoid the area where possible.
