Online poetry reading to benefit Red Deer women experiencing period poverty

The Period Promise Poetry Powerhouse is a central Alberta collective of some of the region’s greatest women leading change.

They will be reading from She Was, “poems about phenomenal women” on Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Zoom to help overcome period poverty.

All ticket proceeds go to the Soroptimist Menstrual Warriors fundraising team for the Period Promise.

The pilot project by Soroptimist International of Central Alberta and the United Way of Central Alberta, is a local response to a global issue: Many women can’t afford feminine hygiene products.

“We can reduce the isolation created by period poverty in our neighborhoods,” said Sherri Smith, Soroptimist International of Central Alberta club president.

“We are raising funds and collecting feminine hygiene products for the Period Promise, while encouraging organizations and individuals to do the same.”

Membership in Soroptimist International of Central Alberta is open to women, trans, and non-binary people who value equity and education for women.

Tickets for the Period Promise Poetry Powerhouse are $10 through Eventbrite or from www.facebook.com/events/2904326196553500.

The event is sponsored by Surrender Living, an online mental health space.

Half of sales proceeds from She Was, by local author Sabrina Samuel, goes towards Central Alberta Sexual Assault Centre programs.

Feminine hygiene products can be donated at the United Way at any time.
