An Ontario family is recovering in Boston after spending the night at sea aboard a whale-watching boat that was stranded for 17 hours off the coast of Massachusetts.
Craig Bawden, of Newmarket, along with his wife and two young children were among the 157 passengers aboard a Boston Harbour Cruise boat that got caught on a mooring cable Monday afternoon.
Bawden says it was a “miserable” experience — a far cry from the three-hour whale-watching trip he and his family had expected.
U.S. Coast Guard officials say divers were brought to the scene — about 20 kilometres offshore — Monday night, but were unable to detach the cable, and an attempt to transfer the passengers to another vessel was aborted because of the rough seas.
Bawden says many of the passengers, including his 10-year-old daughter, suffered seasickness during the night.
But the ordeal was an exciting adventure for Bawden’s eight-year-old son, Colter, who says his favourite part was getting to sleep on the boat at sea, something he had never experienced before.
