Open house to study planned power substation

Two public open houses are being held in the next week regarding a new substation and transmission line in northeast Red Deer.

Two public open houses are being held in the next week regarding a new substation and transmission line in northeast Red Deer.

One will run today and another on Tuesday, May 28.

The City of Red Deer reports there’s a need to build a new substation and transmission line. The substation and transmission line are proposed about one km east from the 67th Street and 30th Avenue interchange.

“This work is needed if we want to continue to provide power to new customers without a service impact to existing customers,” said Jim Jorgensen, Electric Light and Power Department manager. “We cannot continue to build homes, businesses and developments without additions to our system.”

This week’s open house will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at Safety City at 3030 55th St. Next week’s open house will be at the same time, but at Eastview Estates Community Centre at 120 Ellenwood Dr.

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), a not-for-profit entity responsible for the safe, reliable and economic planning and operation, has called for the work. The city plans to install 1.6 km of transmission line, which is required to connect the new substation to the provincial electrical grid.

There are no service interruptions expected while the substation and transmission line are constructed.
