Uncertainty over when in-person restaurant dining can resume in Alberta has delayed the opening of a new eatery and pub in downtown Red Deer.

The Pizza Co. was supposed to open in the space vacated by Hudson’s in Executive Place at the corner of Ross Street and 49th Avenue before Christmas.

But on Dec. 8, Premier Jason Kenney restricted restaurants in Alberta to take-out only in reaction to the rising spread of COVID-19 in the province.

Sanjay Uniyal, who owns Indian Kitchen in downtown Red Deer, said plans are still underway to open The Pizza Co. at the central downtown location.

“We have our own team” of servers and kitchen staff already in place, he added.

But the start-up depends on what happens over the next few weeks with restaurant restrictions. Uniyal said he is hoping The Pizza Co. restaurant and bar will open its doors by the end of January — even if just for take-out and delivery orders.

“We wanted to try something different” than serving Indian food, explained Uniyal of the new venture. He’s planning a menu of pizza, burgers and pasta.

Indian Kitchen has several other locations, including Medicine Hat and Courtenay and Golden in B.C.
