Red Deer-Mountain View MP Earl Dreeshen is calling on the federal government to honour its commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation process.

It’s been six years since the Truth and Reconciliation committee presented its report, with calls to address the residential school wrongdoings, said Dreeshen.

He believes it’s time the federal government took more of a role in finding and memorializing the lost graves of the young Indigenous students who didn’t survive the residential school system — and also providing “something meaningful” to survivors and their families.

This could mean more mental health supports to help families deal with the inter-generational trauma caused by the residential school system, said Dreeshen.

“It’s time we take a look at all the (old school) sites and make sure we are respectfully dealing with this sad legacy of our history.”
