The former home of a Red Deer County cabinet company that fell victim to the recession has a new owner.

Peavey Industries LP plans to use the 130,000-square-foot building on seven acres in Gasoline Alley as a warehouse from which products will be shipped to Peavey’s corporate and dealer-owned stores.

Red Deer County’s municipal planning commission approved a development permit for the site at Liberty Avenue and Lantern Street on Tuesday.

“It’s great to see more businesses taking up residence in the county,” said Coun. Lonny Kennett.

Coun. Connie Huelsman was also happy to see that another company has found use for a building that has sat empty since 2019.

“It’s nice to see that building will be used again,” said Huelsman. “(Westridge) was a well-known business for many, many years.”

Westridge had been in business for 37 years when it folded in July 2019, a victim of a recession that had begun in 2014 and led to yearly drops in new home builds.

Westridge had been billed as “the largest fully integrated cabinet manufacturer in Western Canada.”

Peavey plans to make some minor changes to loading docks and an entrance off Liberty Avenue.

Meanwhile, work is near completion on a 40,000 square-foot retail store, located at 2810 50 Ave.

The store, which will employ up to 50 people, is expected to be open in the spring.
