EDMONTON — The RDC Kings got the bad end of the stick in a 3-2 loss to the Concordia University College Thunder in Alberta Colleges Men’s Hockey League play Friday.
The Kings were assessed nine of 11 minor penalties, had two players kicked out of the game, and saw the winning goal count despite hitting the cross bar.
“It was an ugly game, an embarrassment to the league,” said Kings head coach Trevor Keeper. “At the start the referee came over and said he was going to let us play. For the first period that was the case then suddenly he’s calling everything against us. I don’t think I’ve been in a game where we had nine of 11 penalties.”
The Kings led 2-1 after 40 minutes on goals by DJay McGrath and Davis Claffey.
“In the third period there’s a big scramble in front of their net and the net gets pushed off and we get a penalty out of the deal. Then they score off the cross bar . . it’s tough to take,” said Keeper.
Mike Salmon made 22 saves in goal.
The Kings will get a chance for redemption tonight as they host the Thunder at 7:15 p.m. at the Penhold Regional Multiplex.
Volleyball
CARONPORT, Sask.— Both RDC volleyball teams expected a tough test as they hit the road this weekend for a doubleheader with the Briercrest Bible College Clippers.
But they were able to shake off their bus legs Friday and sweep the Clippers with the Queens winning 25-23, 27-25, 25-22 and the Kings 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14.
“It’s tough to travel all that way and then play, but we came out and played well,” said Queens head coach Talbot Walton. “The first set was fairly even until we pulled away at the end. The second we trailed early, tied it at 11 and then played fairly well when we needed to. The third set we led, they battled back, we pulled ahead and they came back, before we once again put it away at the end.
“In think overall it was a reflection of a tough trip, but I believe we can play better tomorrow.”
Amber Adolf was the RDC player of the game with seven kills and nine digs and setter Bronwyn Hawkes was once against outstanding and added three kills, 13 digs and two stuff blocks.
Shelby Bromall had nine kills and four digs, Brooke Sutter seven kills and 10 digs, Alex Donaghy seven kills and Karissa Kuhr five kills and eight digs. Libero Maddi Quinn had 11 digs.
The Queens ran their record to 15-0 with BBC slipping to 11-4.
The Kings had a letdown in the third set, but impressed head coach Aaron Schulha with the effort in the fourth set.
“The third set we had a mental letdown, but it was nice to see the way we responded in the fourth set.”
Tim Finnigan led the Kings with 18 kills, 11 digs, four aces and a block while Braden O’Toole added 17 kills, two aces and nine digs, Chris Jones four kills and 10 digs, Chris Osborn five kills and five digs and Justin Lukacs six kills.
The Kings are 13-0 with BBC at 7-6.
