WATCH: Penhold’s Winterfest turnout five times higher on Family Day weekend

More than 500 people attended the Town of Penhold’s Winterfest Sunday afternoon.

More than 500 people attended the Town of Penhold’s Winterfest Sunday afternoon.

Melanie Willerth, events and communications coordinator, said the turnout was about five times higher this year compared to previous years.

The turnout exceeded Willerth’s expectations.

The event that has been hosted outdoors in the past, grew this year, as the town added indoor activities at Penhold Regional Multiplex. Families came out to enjoy skating, sleigh ride and a bonfire outdoors and face painting, bouncy castles, virtual reality games, hot dogs and hot chocolate indoors.

Willerth said the town has cancelled the event in the past due to cold weather.

“We wanted to host no matter what the weather,” she said.

Party VR, a business in Penhold, had setup a virtual reality booth at the Multiplex letting kids of all ages enjoy virtual reality games like Bottom of the Ocean and Space Pirate Trainer.

Jordan Dykes, owner, said the proceeds from the booth were going towards building a skate park in Penhold.

The Penhold Optimist Skatepark Club members were at the event selling cotton candy to raise money for the skate park.
