Hundreds of people from across Alberta are expected to attend Red Deer’s first celebration of Philippine culture next month.

A cultural festival, with live music and dancing, will be held on Saturday, July 30, from 1 to 6 p.m. on the outdoor stage at Bower Ponds.

It’s being presented during Philippine Heritage Month by the Philippine Canadian Association of Red Deer and District, along with Alibata Music Production.

Many families have immigrated to central Alberta over the decades, and this the first year of what will hopefully become an annual event, said Cherry Lyn De Castro, secretary of the local Philippine association.

She noted similar festivals have been held in Edmonton, Lethbridge and other Alberta communities, so it’s Red Deer turn to come on board for the cultural celebration.

De Castro expects from 700 to 1,000 people to attend the Bower Ponds gathering, including members of Calgary’s Philippine community.

Organizers inviting everyone to come out for a taste of Philippine culture, with live music and performances from the Filipino Cultural Dancers. Raffle tickets will be sold to benefit a local charity.

There’s no admission charge. Free snacks and beverages will be available.
