It’s time for Red Deerians to figure out how to get active with some of the money the city won when it was named Canada’s Most Active Community in the 2022 ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge.

Red Deer beat out more than 1,700 communities across Canada during the month-long national challenge last June.

The $100,000 prize is to be used for physical activity and sports initiatives in the community, and two grants are now available for individuals or organizations to get Red Deerians moving.

“It’s a great opportunity for folks in Red Deer to try something different and inspire the community around them to become a little more active and engaged,” said PJ Swales, sport and recreation co-ordinator with the city.

A total of $60,000 will be split between the two grants. The remaining $40,000 was spent on programs that were part of the initial challenge submission, other programs approved in advance of the grants, marketing and promotions, and last year’s community celebration. A small amount is also being held back in case something comes up or be made available to the community.

“All the funds will be utilized to celebrate and encourage our community to become active,” Swales said.
