Police in Edmonton say a gunshot that pierced a home and hit a woman while she slept appears to have been a "very serious random act of violence."

EDMONTON — Police in Edmonton say a gunshot that pierced a home and hit a woman while she slept appears to have been a "very serious random act of violence."

The woman's condition is stable but critical, police say.

It happened early Sunday morning in a neighbourhood in the city's southwest.

Police say there were others sleeping in the home, including a young child.

They say it's still early in their investigation but that the shooting appears to have been random.

Police are asking anyone who might have seen the shooting or any suspicious activity in the neighbourhood to come forward.
