A 23-year-old Ponoka man is facing a number of charges after a foot chase with police, says Wetaskiwin RCMP.

Officers spotted a man with what appeared to be an open bottle of liquor around the Wetaskiwin Mall while on patrol Thursday.

Police say when the officers initiated communication, the man ran away. A foot chase began and during the chase the man allegedly threw an item that had been concealed by his clothes into a store.

The man was caught and arrested. Police recovered the discarded item and discovered it was a loaded sawed-odd rifle.

He is charged with four counts of possessing a prohibited firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting a peace officer, among other charges.

After a judicial hearing, the man was remanded into custody and will appear in Wetaskiwin Provincial Court on Thursday.
