A 13-year-old Ponoka student is listed in stable condition in an Edmonton hospital after she was struck by an alleged drunk driver Thursday.

The girl was walking to a bus stop with two friends around 8 a.m. when she was struck by a pickup truck, Sgt. Glenn Demaere of Ponoka RCMP said.

The girl was walking south on 38th Street when she was struck from the rear sending her into the west ditch.

She was transported to Ponoka General Hospital then air lifted to the University of Alberta Hospital by STARS as a precaution because of suspected head injuries, police said.

The 55-year-old pickup driver is charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, driving with more than .08 per cent alcohol in his blood and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

The man’s name hasn’t been released yet because an information hasn’t been sworn yet, Demaere said.

The accused was released from custody and appears in Ponoka provincial court Nov. 27.
