Portaits, abstracts, prints are part of Christmas art shows in Red Deer

A bevy of Red Deer galleries are exhibiting and selling original artworks in the lead-up to Christmas.

A pop-up exhibition this Saturday will feature work by the Vacant Artist Collective – Dan Anhorn, Marnie Blair, Alysse Bowd, Devin Chambers, Teena Dickerson, Katelin Karbonik and Robin Lambert.

The collective is “focused on sharing knowledge, collaborating and building community.

“Up until now (we) have been exclusively an online presence hosting artists talks and group critiques…please join us in our first in-person event. ” The We Made It exhibit runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at unit 5, 4949-49 St., with a 1 p.m. public critique.

Children in Nature, paintings by Leah Bargen, is on at the Marjorie Wood Gallery in the Kerry Wood Nature Centre. The acrylic paintings will be exhibited to Dec. 17.

The exhibit Vintage Charm, paintings by Kathleen Polson, is running at the Kiwanis Gallery in the Red Deer Public Library until Jan. 3. The gallery is operated by the Red Deer Arts Council. A First Friday opening reception will be held Dec. 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Abstract Universe, an exhibit by Marilyn Goodswimmer and Jaleesa Zaparniuk, is running to Dec. 3 at the Knock Knock Gallery in Room 2925 at Red Deer Ploytechnic. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Susan Delaney’s show Undertow — women I’ve known, is running at the Viewpoint Gallery in Red Deer’s Arts and Culture Services building, 5205-48th Ave. to Dec. 23. The gallery will be open for extended hours on First Friday, until 6:30 p.m.

Portraits in Nature: A Meditation on Process and Loss, by Chris Wutzke, is running at the Corridor Community Gallery, downstairs in the Red Deer Recreation Centre. The exhibit of cyanotype prints runs to Dec. 23.

As of Dec. 1 at Riverlands Studio/ Gallery IS, there will be spotlight on local artist Margriet Hogue, along with works by resident artist Carol Lynn Gilchrist. Hogue’s new series is called Raveling and containing scraps of fabric. Her mixed-media paintings are inspired by the natural world. A First Friday opening will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 5123-48th St. The show runs Dec. 1-23.

A Look into Quarantine is a mixed-media show by Justin Luke at the Velvet Olive Lounge that runs for all of December. A First Friday reception will be held Dec. 3 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Amanda Frost’s diverse artworks are featured for the month of December at Curiosity Art and Framing, Unit 4 -4676-61st Street. A Christmas reception will be held on First Friday. Please RSVP to attend.

The Christmas Wishes art exhibition is on at A+ Gallery and Unique Collections at unit 203, 4919-49th St. from Dec. 3-18. There’s an opening reception on First Friday, Dec. 3, from noon to 4 p.m.

Ya Ha Tinda: Photography by Arto Djerdjerian, will be showing from Dec. 4 to March 5 at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery. There will be an opening reception for this show of photos from the federally-operated horses ranch near Banff — on Dec.12.

Many of the galleries are operating under the Restrictions Exemption Program, which means that proof of vaccinations or a negative COVID test result will be needed for admission.
