Prisoner pleads guilty to stabbing at Bowden prison

A federal prisoner has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault after an inmate was stabbed with a sharpened metal spoon at Bowden Institution more than two years ago.

A federal prisoner has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault after an inmate was stabbed with a sharpened metal spoon at Bowden Institution more than two years ago.

Joseph Alexander Mason, 46, pleaded guilty on Monday in connection with the Nov. 14, 2008, incident. Sentencing will take place in Red Deer provincial court on Feb. 28.

An attempted murder charge was dropped. A four-week trial was scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

The 47-year-old victim suffered stab wounds to his abdomen, chest and back.
