Lacombe County has approved an RV park and golf course project proposed near Eckville.

The county’s municipal planning commission gave final approval on Thursday to a rezoning application for Alberta Views RV and Golf Resort, which will be built at the site of the former Last Hill Golf Course. That course closed down in 2009.

Bill and Carla MacLean bought the 153-acre property just northwest of Eckville in 2015 and plan to create a 100-site seasonal RV park along with a playground, small pool, pickleball courts and a trail leading to a water feature.

Once the RV park is up and running, work will get underway on a nine-hole golf course with driving range.

Bill MacLean said recently that the game plan is to build the RV park first and then he will turn his attention to restoring the dormant golf course to playable condition as early as the summer of 2023 if all of the pieces fall into place.

All of the RV lots will be services with water, wastewater and power.

MacLean told the planning commission on Thursday he has recently contracted a new construction company to speed up the schedule for the project.

County planning staff recommended the rezoning application be approved, saying “staff considers that the proposed campground is a suitable use of the lands, and complements the existing golf course development that has been operational previously.”

As part of the planning process, neighbours were notified and a public open house was held. No concerns have been raised about the project.
