Quad thief sorry

A Mirror man who was peppered with two shotgun blasts following the theft of a farmer’s ATV said he would have done the same thing if someone was stealing his property.

STETTLER — A Mirror man who was peppered with two shotgun blasts following the theft of a farmer’s ATV said he would have done the same thing if someone was stealing his property.

Harold Groening, 31, said outside court on Thursday that he feared for his life after being shot on March 26 while in a field near Tees.

Groening, who appeared in court with Legal Aid Society of Alberta lawyer John McBeath of Red Deer, reserved his plea until May 28 on charges of theft of a vehicle valued at more than $5,000, theft of the ATV valued at less than $5,000 and possession of the stolen ATV.

Ironically, Groening returns to court the same day as Brian Russell Knight, 38, of Tees who is accused of shooting him.

Another person charged with theft of the ATV — Kyle Rosenthal, 23, of Alix — also returns to provincial court on May 28 after reserving his plea on Thursday.
