A Red Deer man facing a number of charges, including attempted murder, in connection with a domestic dispute appeared in Red Deer provincial court on Wednesday.

RCMP were called to a residence near 39th Street and 50th Avenue in Red Deer at about 8:50 p.m. on Monday as the result of reports of an assault.

Police allege that a man held his common-law wife against her will, bound, smothered and threatened her. She was eventually able to run to a neighbouring residence and call police.

RCMP media liaison Cpl . Kathe DeHeer said the alleged incident did not happen over an extended period. “It was a shorter time period.”

The woman did not require hospital treatment. Police are not releasing further details on the alleged attack.

Tibor Smode, 44, of Red Deer was arrested and charged with single counts of attempted murder; forcible confinement; aggravated assault; and uttering threats.

In court, the charges were read out to Smode, who responded “yes ma’am” to each count when asked if he understood the charge.

Legal aid lawyer Murray Shack represented Smode, who will be trying to get a lawyer.

Smode is expected back in court Sept. 1. He remains in custody.
