Raising money for central Alberta man

Gofundme account set up

A Gofundme account has been posted for a Springbrook man who is losing his battle with diabetes.

The account “Financial support needed for Shawn Mayo Family” was recently set up in an effort to raise $10,000.

Rhonda Nelson helped organize the fundraising campaign for her friend.

“He’s got a heart of gold. He’d do anything for anybody. I would just love to see the community pitch in and just flood him with some help,” Rhonda said.

She said diabetes has damaged Mayo’s liver and he has been given four to six months to live. Mayo lives with his mother Jude and the money raised will help pay for medical expenses and other costs.

“His mom is an amazing lady. Shawn was the one who was paying all the bills before he went down like this,” said Kurt Nelson, who worked with Mayo, a welder.

He said Mayo, a long-time Springbrook resident, was also a great mechanic and would help people fix their vehicles.

“He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed any help. He was always helping out.”

This month Rhonda Nelson nominated Mayo for a draw sponsored by Nufloors Red Deer. Nufloors wanted to give away 200 square feet of flooring and installation to a deserving community member, and Mayo won.

Rhonda said winning the draw was a blessing that will definitely help out the family.
