A pair of events are set for Sunday in Red Deer to show support for Ukraine.

At 2 p.m. a “Red Deer Stands with Ukraine” rally will take place at City Hall Park. The event is sponsored by the Ukrainian Displaced Persons Planning Committee.

In the evening, local representatives of the Iranian Democratic Association of Canada are hosting a free dinner at the Pidherney Centre curling facility at 5 p.m.

The Iranian association wanted to show their solidarity with displaced Ukrainian families. Many Iranians now living in Canada were forced to flee their homeland as well.

“It will be an opportunity for sharing a meal together and fellowship,” said Father Jim Nakonechny, of Red Deer’s St. Vladimir Ukrainian Church.

Nearly 50 people from the local Ukrainian community as well as new arrivals are attending, along with 50 to 60 people from the local Iranian community. The event is now full.
