LA RONGE, Sask. — An RCMP public safety alert in northern Saskatchewan warning of dangerous people with firearms has been cancelled, although police say one of the suspects they were seeking is still at large and should not be approached.

Police say in a news release that multiple people have been arrested following the alert, which was issued early Sunday afternoon in La Ronge, located over 300 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

However, they say an unidentified person whose photo was released in conjunction with the alert has not yet been located, and that the public should remain vigilant.

No injuries have been reported.

The initial alert said that police were seeking two men with handguns and that shots had been fired at police.

People were told to seek immediate shelter, close and lock doors and windows, and be cautious of anyone asking for a ride.

The suspect police are still seeking is described as having short dark hair with sides shaved, wearing dark pants and a dark shirt with gold patterns down the sleeves and dark running shoes.

“The suspect is considered dangerous and should not be approached,” a news release from RCMP Sunday evening stated.

“Police continue to look for him. His identity has not been confirmed.”

The photo that police released showed him holding what appeared to be a handgun.

Anyone who sees him is asked to contact their local police service or RCMP immediately. In an emergency, police say the public should call 911.

RCMP say officers remain in the area and the public can expect to see an increased police presence in the La Ronge area, as well as in the neighbouring community of Air Ronge.

They say their investigation remains ongoing and that they will release more details Monday, or as they become available.
