As the weather warms across Alberta, RCMP is warning drivers to watch their speed.

In a news release Tuesday, police said that one in four fatal collisions involve unsafe speed and more than half of those fatal collisions happen in rural areas.

In 2020 alone, RCMP issued over 58,700 speeding tickets.

“Alberta RCMP issued 974 speeding tickets to motorists in April 2020 alone. Speeding is one of the biggest threats to traffic safety, yet is a common habit for many drivers,” explains Supt. Gary Graham, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services.

“Ensure you always abide by the posted limit. The dangers of speeding far outweigh the minute or two you think you are gaining.”

The RCMP is reminding drivers to always drive to conditions, allow a few extra minutes to get to your destination and be aware of speed limits in playground and construction zones.
