RCMP helicopter helps rescue woman missing for days near Gleniffer Lake

Woman last seen on Monday morning spotted by helicopter on Thursday morning

An RCMP helicopter was called in to help rescue an elderly Didsbury woman who was found after a four-day search in a heavily wooded near Gleniffer Lake.

The 78-year-old woman was reported missing after she was last seen at Dickson Point Campground at Gleniffer Lake about 10:30 a.m. Monday. RCMP appealed to the public for help finding the woman, who may be confused raising concerns about her safety.

Search and rescue teams from Red Deer County, Sundre, Rocky Mountain House and Wetaskiwin joined the search along with Red Deer County patrol officers and firefighters from Innisfail and Red Deer County fire departments.

Residents in Gleniffer Lake, Spruce View and Dickson and other nearby areas were asked to keep an eye out for the woman and to check treed areas and outbuildings on their properties.

About 9:30 a.m. Thursday an RCMP helicopter spotted the woman walking out of a heavily wooded area near the Dickson Trout Pond at the south end of Gleniffer Lake. When rescue teams got to her she was found alive and in good spirits.

Steep banks made it difficult to transport the woman and the RCMP helicopter moved in and hovered nearby so the woman could be taken to safety. After a medical assessment, she was airlifted by STARS to hospital.

RCMP said the woman remains confused about her ordeal and police are still trying to piece together what happened during the last few days.
