UPDATE: RCMP investigate collision that injured man on QEII Highway

Pedestrian involved in collision at 32 Street exit, say police

Blackfalds RCMP is investigating a collision involving a pedestrian on Highway 2.

The collision shortly after 1 p.m. was initially reported by RCMP as a fatal, but later updated to say the victim was badly injured and airlifted by STARS to Edmonton, where he was last reported in critical condition on Thursday.

Northbound traffic was diverted from the scene as officers investigate the collision, which took place just north of the 32nd Street northbound exit in Red Deer.

More than half a dozen police vehicles were at the scene of the collision. The highway appeared to be surrounded by what looked to be the pedestrian’s possessions. Two shoes could be seen lying on the highway.

The northbound ramps at 32nd Street were blocked off by police vehicles until shortly before 3 p.m. Despite the highway’s re-opening, delays were still expected due to the volume of vehicles, 511 Alberta said on Twitter.

The highway was reduced to one lane northbound and a huge line of vehicles was building south of the collision scene.

In a tweet, the City of Red Deer asked people to avoid the area as crews were working.

— This story was updated on Friday to indicate the collision was not fatal as initially reported
