RCMP investigating murder at Drumheller Institution

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating a murder at Drumheller Institution.

At about 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Drumheller RCMP responded to a reported “serious assault” at the Drumheller Institution.

A 38-year-old man from Nanaimo allegedly assaulted a 34-year-old man from Parkland County without provocation, said police.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital, where he died.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation. An autopsy has been ordered by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and will be performed in the coming days.

The suspect has been charged with second-degree murder and will appear in Drumheller Provincial Court on Feb. 11.
