RCMP emergency response team officers were called in on Wednesday after a man in Innisfail barricaded himself in a garage and threatened to shoot police with a crossbow.

Innisfail RCMP said they got a call about 8 p.m. of a man in distress who was holed up in his garage near 51 St. and 36th Ave. Close. Police surrounded the house and called in the Southern Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team and Crisis Response Team.

Neighbouring residents were asked by police to stay in their homes and all others were asked to avoid the area.

Police negotiated with the man for several hours. At some point, the man turned a can of bear spray on himself and was in medical distress.

Emergency response team officers forced their way into the garage and safely arrested the man, who was taken to hospital.

Police do not plan to lay charges.
