RCMP search continues for Springbrook carjacker

Police also seek information on whereabouts of carjacker and stolen flatbed truck prior to Tuesday

More details have emerged about the criminal actions of a man in the days before a bus collision and carjacking near Springbrook earlier this week.

Police said the driver of the stolen truck was one of two men involved in a break-in at a Fountain Tire in Drumheller on Jan. 15. A Ford F-350 was used to smash through a bay door and the flatbed truck was stolen.

The Ford F-350 was located at a rural property in the Stettler area where the driver, who was allegedly trying to steal fuel, was arrested.

The Fountain Tire truck turned up in Bashaw in the early hours of Jan. 16. It was used to damage an Esso gas station and the driver stole property.

Later on Jan. 16, the same truck was spotted at a rural property near Delburne.

“We believe that perhaps the suspect of the Fountain Tire truck was trying to steal some gas on a rural property,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Laurel Scott.

The culprit was spotted and the truck left.

“As it was leaving, some shots were fired. The shots came from the Fountain Tire truck, but we have not established if they were fired at anything.”

There were no injuries.

On Tuesday morning, the truck slammed head-on into a school bus carrying seven children just west of Springbrook. Seven children were on board and two were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The truck’s driver carjacked the vehicle of a Springbrook woman who had stopped to help. Neither he nor the vehicle have been located.

The 2012 Mistsubishi Outlander with licence plate BNR 6558 is still missing and police are asking the public to keep an eye out for it. If the driver is spotted with the vehicle, police warn the public not to approach him because he is considered armed and dangerous.

If the vehicle is found abandoned, call the local police detachment.

Meanwhile, RCMP are still trying to trace the truck’s whereabouts between Jan. 16 and the Jan. 22 morning collision. Anyone with information is asked to call their local RCMP detachment or Blackfalds RCMP at 403-885-3333.
