Red Deer College student-athletes helped the Red Deer Food Bank in a big way this weekend.

Kings’ and Queens’ players collected $323 in donations and 1,225 pounds of food at their Drive-Thru Food Drive Saturday.

“The student-athletes have shown tremendous leadership and dedication in continuing their mission of connecting with the community throughout the year despite the absence of competition,” said Kylie Thomas, RDC vice president academic & research.

The event was led by Amy Szymanek (Queens Basketball), Jaycee Bourke (Queens Curling), and Devin Saunders (Kings Cross Country Running/Indoor Track) and involved RDC student-athletes from a variety of Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference sports.

Alice Kolisnyk, deputy director of the Red Deer Food Bank Society said that the donation will go a long way toward helping feed the community’s most vulnerable.

“Over the past year, the Red Deer Food Bank has faced challenges and overcome them because of the overwhelming support from our community,” she said.

“The RDC Athletics Drive-Thru Food Drive is another example of how Red Deer steps up to assist others in need. The donations gathered at this event will go a long way to feed those who are vulnerable.”
