A gift of festive music is being provided to the community by the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra.

Ribbons and Bows is the first concert of the new Press Play 2021-22 online season. It can be heard at www.rdso.ca.

RDSO musicians are joined by guest pianist Akiko Tominaga to perform A Child’s Christmas in Wales, scored with an adaption of an anonymous Welsh carol, by RDSO music director Claude Lapalme.

A Child’s Christmas in Wales was originally performed by the RDSO in 2012 with a reading of Dylan Thomas’s holiday classic. This time, the text will be narrated by Michael Hope.

Music for the piece was adapted from the Welsh carol because “I felt its nostalgic wistfulness…made it an appropriate choice,” said Lapalme in his notes for the concert. Other carols that he “quoted” in this score are: Good King Wenceslas; Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen; and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

Other seasonal selections, including Ding Dong Merrily on High and We Wish You a Merry Christmas will also be performed in the Ribbons and Bows concert.

This music, with no admission charge, will stream online for the next year.
