Like many communities across Canada, Red Deer was impacted by the Rogers service outage Friday.

Canadians woke up to a widespread outage at Rogers Communications Inc. that left many customers without mobile and internet service. Additionally it cause troubled for debit transactions.

The outage impacted Interac payment options at all Red Deer facilities, the city said on social media.

“ATM services are also affected by the outage and are therefore unable to provide cash on-site. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and bring cash or credit at all city recreation facilities, Sorensen Station and City Hall,” a City of Red Deer statement said at 10:36 a.m.

Early in the day, the city tweeted: “We are aware of an issue preventing Rogers mobile customers from calling 911. Land lines and other mobile customers such as Telus and Bell are not affected.”

Tyler Pelke, Red Deer Emergency Services acting chief, said the emergency services and dispatching unit didn’t experience any outages on their end.

“We didn’t really feel any impacts that way and … we haven’t been made aware of anybody who hasn’t been able to get through (to 911),” said Pelke.

“When some people aren’t able to get through to 911, we work with our communications partners to make sure we can let the public know that there is an impact and do their best to have a landline or make other arrangements.”

At 3:19 p.m., Alberta RCMP issued a statement saying Alberta RCMP Operational Communications Centres are functioning normally and can still receive your emergency 911 calls during the nation-wide Rogers Communications service outage.

But Alberta RCMP reminded the public that all Rogers customers with telephone service are not able to connect with 911 operators.

“If you are one of the users affected by the outage, we encourage you to plan ahead for access to emergency services through another network phone, landline, or in person,” said Alberta RCMP.

Some local businesses were impacted as well.

The Hideout Eats and Beats, located in Gasoline Alley, took to Facebook to warn customers debit and ATM services were unavailable during the outage and only credit card was being accepted.

“We hope that Roger’s resolves this issue quickly. Thank you for your patience and understanding,” the Facebook post said.
