Red Deer area candidates for the People’s Party of Canada want to end late-term abortion in the country.
Red Deer-Mountain View candidate Paul Mitchell and Red Deer-Lacombe candidate Laura-Lynn Thompson have written a private member’s bill, which will be submitted to Parliament if either of them is elected.
Mitchell said many Canadians have no idea that late-term abortions on healthy babies in the seventh to ninth month are legal in Canada.
“Beyond 24 weeks, the pre-born baby is viable outside the mother and must be allowed to live. When the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the old abortion law in 1988, all the justices agreed the state has a compelling interest in defending the unborn, especially after the second trimester.
“After 30 years with no law in Canada, a debate on abortion in Parliament is long overdue,” Mitchell added.
“Viable late-term pre-born Canadian babies must be allowed to live, and I will fight for this.”
Thompson said the bill is very reasonable and, if passed, would still be one of the most permissive abortion laws in any western country.
Abortion would still be available up until 24 weeks, and exceptions would exist where there has been sexual abuse of a minor, rape or where the woman’s health or life is in serious jeopardy.
Conservative Leader Andrew Sheer has stated he will not allow the abortion debate to be opened under a Tory government.
