The Canyon Ski Resort near Red Deer will open Saturday.

The projected opening day was Monday, but Mother Nature didn’t co-operate, said general manager David Martel.

Last year, the hill had the earliest opening in its history and the resort was the first one to open in Western Canada.

Over the long weekend, the resort staff and volunteers were busy getting ready for the new season.

The Alberta Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Association has found a new home at Canyon. This winter, the jumps originally built for the 1988 Alberta Winter Games will be redeveloped and used by the club, which has been looking for a new venue after being forced out of Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.

The association has worked tirelessly on the trail work since August.

Martel said there will be demo ski jump days, so the public can try the sport.

Alberta Alpine launched a provincial ski cross team in June. Training for new athletes begins in December at Canyon, according to albertaalpine.ca.

The athletes will use the facility developed for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
