Red Deer artist Brenda Smith did another drop-off of free original artwork for strangers to find around the city last weekend.

On March 12, Smith used an “Art and Found elf” to help distribute her wrapped paintings in hidden locations around Red Deer.

Smith was one of 600 artists from around the world who participated in the Art and Found project, which aims to make art available to anybody.

Like the BookCrossing project that encourages people to leave free books for strangers as a literacy-boosting effort — many artists are already dropping off gifts of creativity throughout the year to foster public appreciation of original art — and as a gesture of kindness, said Smith.

In the past, her plastic-wrapped creations have turned up on bus benches and city parks with notes telling finders that the artworks are in need of loving homes. Since all art is subjective, the notes also state: “If this is not to your taste, please pass it on.”

The Oriole Park resident hopes her small acrylic paintings end up with people who appreciate them.

Did you find a free artwork this week?

If not, Smith said she plans to do more drop-offs throughout the year, “so keep your eye out Red Deer….who knows where you may find a surprise package.”
