The City of Red Deer is reminding residents about safe fire pit use as spring arrives.

With Red Deer experiencing one of its driest winters in 99 years, Red Deerians are reminded to take extra care when having a backyard fire this year.

Some tips include a three-metre distance from buildings, property lines, trees, overhead power lines, combustible fences or other combustible materials, an enclosed fire pit, a flame that does not exceed one metre in height or width and does not create a risk for people or property damage.

The city also encourages residents to check if there’s a fire ban before having a fire, burn only untreated wood, have a safe way to put out the fire and ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.
