Red Deer boy killed in incident

A 12-year-old boy died on Thursday after it’s believed the door of a covered utility trailer fell on him, say Red Deer City RCMP.

A 12-year-old boy died on Thursday after it’s believed the door of a covered utility trailer fell on him, say Red Deer City RCMP.

Mounties were called out to an area on the city’s north side, within Chiles Industrial Park, after the boy was found unconscious at about 3:50 p.m.

Police suspect the boy tried to open the rear door of a covered utility trailer when it toppled on top of him.

Spokeswoman Cpl. Kathe DeHeer said the boy was with family when the incident occurred.

Red Deer City RCMP assisted Red Deer Emergency Services ambulance by blocking intersections en route to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

“We don’t normally do it,” said DeHeer. “We had the opportunity to assist the ambulance by doing that so they could get to the hospital through rush-hour traffic.”

Shortly after hospital arrival, the boy succumbed to his injuries.

Red Deer City RCMP Victim Services are with the family and other people affected by this incident offering comfort and support.

“We have a very grieving family because of a very unfortunate incident that happened to their son,” DeHeer said.
