Red Deer Ride for Dad and Troubled Monk brewery want central Albertans to raise a pint of ale in support of prostate cancer awareness and research.
Troubled Monk launched the limited run, craft beer Ride For Dad – Munich Helles on April 7 in partnership with the local charity.
Vern Lowe, ride captain with Ride for Dad, said the new fundraising effort tastes great.
“We gave our stamp of approval,” Lowe said with a laugh.
“It’s got a nice smooth taste to it, and a nice flavour,” he said about Munich Helles, which is available at Troubled Monk and other liquor stores in Alberta.
Lowe said there is still a lack of awareness among men when it comes to prostate cancer even though it’s a commonly diagnosed cancer.
“Men are men. We don’t meet over coffee and talk about health issues.”
If detected early, prostate cancer has a five-year survivability rate of over 93 per cent.
A lot of men are also under the misconception that the only way to test for prostate cancer is with a rectal exam, but there is a blood test, he said.
“It’s no different than going for a blood test for anything else. It’s very quick, very simple and we need to make people aware of it.”
Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of death from cancer in men in Canada. Most men don’t die of prostate cancer but from cancers such as bone cancer, testicular cancer, and others that spread from undiagnosed/untreated prostate cancer.
Established in 2000, Ride For Dad has raised over $37 million in Canada.
Red Deer Motorcycle Ride for Dad chapter was formed in 2018 and will hold its fourth group ride to raise money this summer.
Lowe said 90 per cent of the funds raised in Alberta stays in Alberta.
A barbecue fundraiser will be held on June 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Messinger Meats, at 2067 50th Ave.
The 2022 Red Deer Motorcycle Ride For Dad is on August 13, which usually attracts between 50 to 100 participants.
“We go rain or shine, or snow.”
Breakfast and registration runs from 7 to 8:45 a.m, and the bikes leave at 9 a.m. The starting location is Turple Bros. Ltd., at 175 Leva Ave, in Gasoline Alley.
