A Red Deer building “looks to be a total loss” after a Saturday morning fire, says Red Deer Emergency Services.

Firefighters responded to the blaze on 60 Street in the Riverside Meadows neighbourhood just after 9 a.m.

The building was comprised of three apartment units: two downstairs and one upstairs.

“The fire got called in at 9:09 a.m. by one of the tenants who smelled smoked in his residence,” said Chris Kearns, RDES deputy chief.

“We’re not sure of the cause yet, but we do know the fire spread quickly and there was a lot of heavy smoke. Fortunately there were no injuries and everyone got out.”

Three RDES units, comprised of 22 crew members, responded to the fire. Many of the responding firefighters remained on scene into the early afternoon.

A fire investigator was on scene Saturday to determine the cause.
