Red Deer building permit values climb in December

Building permits in Red Deer increased in value in December, while fewer permits were issued in the final month of the year.

Building permits in Red Deer increased in value in December, while fewer permits were issued in the final month of the year.

Last month, there were 58 approved permits valued at $6.5 million, compared with 69 permits issued in December 2020 worth $6.3 million.

The most notable permit issued in December was a renovation on a building downtown at 4920 51 Street. A second and fifth-floor renovation which includes new walls, mill work, glass partition systems, coiling overhead shutter, operatable wall and new structural supports as well as fixtures sprinkler system design and HVAC, plumbing fire pump replacement is valued at $1.63 million.

A permit for a new five-bay commercial building at 3321 50 Avenue came in at $1.3 million.

Year over year, permit value was down almost $100 million in 2020. The 2021 value was $109.5 million, compared to $261 million in 2020. Overall in 2021, 1,507 building permits were issued in the city, almost 100 more than in 2020. The majority of those were residential permits, with 684 issued throughout the year.
