City council will consider a new vehicle-for-hire bylaw on Monday, which would affect taxis and ride-shares.
The city is seeking to continue leveling the playing field between the two industries.
Suggested changes include replacing age-related restrictions on vehicles — currently they must be not more than 10 years old for taxis and 15 years for limousines — with mileage restrictions.
Vehicles found through mechanical inspections to still be in good working order could operate if the new bylaw is approved by council.
Administration is also recommending council remove the cap that now exists on taxi plates, based on the city’s population. No other cap exists on other industries and this limits free enterprise, states a report to council.
Minimum passenger charges for using taxis could also be removed to make it equivalents with ride-share companies.
And the licensing process for drivers and brokerages could be simplified.
