A Red Deer County bookkeeping business has been recognized as Canada’s top new firm.

Bean Counters Bookkeeping Ltd. received the 2022 New Firm of the Year Award during a recent Certified Professional Bookkeepers of Canada conference in Calgary.

“We were completely shocked because we had just started our business back in March,” said Tamara Read, who founded the company with Tara Rogers.

“Being newly incorporated and already receiving national recognition from CPB Canada was quite shocking. We’re very honoured.”

Read and Rogers both had 20 years of bookkeeping experience before starting Bean Counters Bookkeeping Ltd., which is located on Leva Avenue in Gasoline Alley.

The two met while working in an accounting office together about three years ago. Read, who was Rogers’ manager, said they both enjoyed the work there but felt the hours were too encompassing in their lives.

“Both of us were pretty burned out. … We didn’t really have time for our family lives, so we decided to go out on our own and start our own company. It’s been a lot less stressful and a lot more rewarding,” she said.

“It’s definitely given us what we were looking for in regards to having more of a work-life balance. We have some phenomenal clients that give us a lot of rewarding feelings when we’re helping them and working to solve their problems.”

The two have the same work ethic and “click” with each other, Read noted.

“Things are going well. We’re getting new clients every day – of course we’re still looking for more,” she said.

Bean Counters Bookkeeping Ltd. serves clients across central Alberta, including in Red Deer, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Ponoka and Rocky Mountain House. For more information about the business, visit www.beancountersbkkg.ca.

CPB Canada is described as a member-based association, a national certifying body, and the leading professional and career development organization for bookkeepers across the country. The association has more than 1,900 members.
