Red Deer County was officially recognized this week for its strong financial reporting.

The County was honoured with the Government Finance Officers Association’s Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for their fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2021.

According to a release, the award is given to “a government unit that publishes an easily readable and efficiently organized annual financial report, whose contents conform to program standards”.

“The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting Program was established to encourage municipal governments throughout Canada to publish high-quality financial reports, its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management,” according to the association.

Reports should go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles and demonstrate an effort to clearly communicate the municipal government’s financial picture, enhance an understanding of financial reporting by municipal governments, and address user needs.

“The annual financial report is part of Red Deer County’s commitment to being an open and accountable local government, by presenting clear and concise financial information,” said Heather Surkan, Corporate Services Director for Red Deer County.

“In receiving the award, Red Deer County’s dedication to a high standard of fiscal responsibility and transparency is acknowledged.”
